Barangay Duran History
“Barangay Duran, formerly known as *Sitio Quitiog*, was established in the early 1960s. Initially named by the first *Teniente Del Barrio*, Felix Sembrano, *Sitio Quitiog* referenced the elevated terrain and sparse population of the area. Later, it was renamed to Barangay Duran in honor of Don Ulpiano Duran Sr., whose family owned much of the local land and generously donated sites for essential facilities. These include the Duran Elementary School, Day Care Center, Barangay Health Center, and Barangay Hall.
The annual fiesta is celebrated on October 10th in honor of *Nuestra Señora del Rosario* (Our Lady of the Holy Rosary), the barangay’s patron saint. Barangay Duran is well-known for its rich fishing resources, with many local fisherfolk owning *bancas* (pump boats) and selling a variety of dried fish in local sari-sari stores at more affordable prices than those in the town center. As one of the municipality’s most densely populated areas, Barangay Duran has expanded to include key facilities such as the Municipal Early Childcare Development Center, Mother Teresa Colegio de Balatan, the Seventh Day Adventist kindergarten, and the Municipal Evacuation Center, positioning it for further growth and income generation.”

This website is a partnership project of the Local Government of Balatan with the Fundacion de Religiosos para la Salud (FRS), Cor Jesu Salus Infirmorum, and funded by Valencia Generalitat. The project is designed to empower vulnerable communities by providing fast access to critical, up-to-date information on disaster preparedness and climate adaptation. Through a user-friendly online platform and QR codes in key public areas, residents can easily access resources such as risk assessments, evacuation routes, and contingency plans tailored for each barangay. By equipping residents, particularly in high-risk coastal areas, with knowledge to anticipate risks and respond effectively during emergencies, this initiative strengthens community resilience, reduces disruptions, and empowers individuals to protect themselves and their families.
